Underground

Underground
by Shane W. Evans

Summary: A family silently crawls along the ground. They run barefoot through unlit woods, sleep beneath bushes, take shelter in a kind stranger's home. Where are they heading? They are heading for Freedom by way of the Underground Railroad.

Roaring Brook Press, 2011.

  1. I would share this with elementary age children, as well as older. The contrast between the darkness and the bright yellow portrays very powerfully the contrast between the quiet fear of a slave family trying to escape and the exultant feeling of freedom. Simple, yet poignant.
