Snook Alone by Marilyn Nelson illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering
Summary: Through the power of faith, a monk named Abba Jacob and his loyal rat terrier, Snook, are reunited after being separated by a ferocious storm.
This illustrations in this book are captivating -- the color palette is so rich, and there is a great deal of expression and emotion portrayed. I agree with you, Dawn, that it's probably geared toward the older Caldecott age-range. I'd love to hear from someone who has shared this with a child.
This is my favorite picture book of the year. Lovely and powerful. For all ages.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the simple sketches that are so expressive and tell so much of the story. The colors are great too.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by the advanced vocabulary of the story and its length. I'd say it was for the upper reaches of the Caldecott award age range.
What a wonderful book. Lyrical use of language, evocative illustrations.
