This book is adorable! The expressions on the animals' faces are priceless!
I agree, Clare. The advice in this book takes on a whole new meaning when you see the illustrations!
This book is really cute and funny. The illustrations in this book are colorful and really give meaning to the text.
This is hilarious! I think it was especially clever for the illustrator to use other animals, not humans, to demonstrate the things that should not be done.
I loved this book. The animals are wonderful. I'd never thought about taking a shark to the dentist but it would most definitely be a bad thing. It would be great to have kids think of other things that certain animals shouldn't do. The pictures are amazing. The animals look so normal in the "real" world.
Linette, good point about the illustrator using other animals instead of humans - it really adds to the humor of the book. The text and illustrations go hand-in-hand. The text gives the advice, and the illustrations show us the "why." I love that the author didn't spell out for us why would should never take a shark to the dentist, but let the illustrations do the talking instead.
Awesome!!!! What a great way to get kids to think outside the box. I really enjoyed how Barrett just introduced the idea and allowed you to figure out the real meaning through the pictures. What a creative and imaginative way to get a point across. Kids will love this book!
Cute and humorous story. The pictures give the reader the ability to figure out why they should not do the things mentioned. It uses both text and illustrations to tell a story, which is wonderful. Children could share their own silly ideas of what not to do and make their pictures tell the rest of the story as the illustrator in this book does.
I think this would be a great book for students to pick an illustration and explain why it would not be good to be in that situation. Such as answering the question: "Why would it not be good to take a shark to the dentist?" This story made me laugh, but I felt like it was more a book of suggestions. Students could totally add to this and have fun with it. When I connected the illustrations with the story, the illustrations only added to the story! I love them! The centipide buying shoes, makes me want to go shoe shopping and try on an absurd amount of shoes.
I agree with Jessica that this book would be perfect to show students the illustrations and have them tell why they think it would be a bad idea. This book is a great way to have students practice inferences. You could read the words and have them tell why they think it would be a bad idea before you show them the illustrations. The illustrations in this book are cute and humorous.
