Abstract: Nine-year-old Liz accompanies the stranger who is her father, just returned from the war, when he goes hunting for crows in Pennsylvania farmland. Illustrations created with watercolor and acrylic-gouache on paper.

  1. One of the finest picturebooks I have ever read. Ms. Lowry's text is down-to-earth real and Bagram Ibatoulline's artwork is brilliantly understated. My choice for the Caldecott Medal.
