You wouldn't think a book like this would be notable for its illustrations, but it is! The illustrations are very modern and fairly basic, but the color sets this one apart. A very interestingly illustrated book. Not Caldecott, but noteworthy!
I agree with you, Matt. The illustrations and colors in this book add so much. As a non-fiction picture book, incorporating the Day-Glo colors into the illustrations, and the cartoony, 1950s feel were brilliant moves, bringing to life the subject and time period for young readers.
I really like how the color is used in the illustrations and I think the drawings are cute. I don't think there is anything though that makes the illustrations outstanding thus I don't see this title as a possible Caldecott.
