  1. I am not familiar with the author or the illustrator of "Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude..." and I was very lost with the story line and the illustrations until I read the last page of the book. I had even looked at both book flaps and didn't get it. I sure wish the last page had been the first page of the book. Well, after looking at the illustration 3 or 4 times I have to say they do add a lot to the story. Do I find them appealing, no. I have to be honest, I don't like modern art and these illustrations are definitely in that class.

  2. I LOVED this book! It was one that had randomly caught my attention from the picture book shelves before I even knew it was on our Mock Caldecott blog. Of course, it helps to at least have an interest in the works of Gertrude Stein, but I don't think it's necessary. The odd, dreamy illustrations and singsong story conjure up visions of artists and other unique personalities at a zany tea party, great inspiration for minds who are exploring modern art.

  3. I loved this book - the text is so original and charming! The illustrations and the type font are a perfect marriage to the 'story'. I think it is a beautiful introduction for children (and adults) to the world of artistic creativity. I cannot wait to read this book aloud!
