While the illustrations in this book ARE lovely, I'm afraid this title must be withdrawn from our discussion, due to the fact that the illustrator is not a resident or citizen of the United States, and is thus not eligible to win the Caldecott Award.
I am glad Kris pointed this out. It appears that this illustrator, Meilo So, was born in Hong Kong, educated in the UK and currently resides with her husband and daugther in a small cottage in the Shetland Isles and spend a significant amount of time in a rented apartment in the Italian countryside.
